From milking cows in Australia to playing a leading role in our new SME Division!

Martin Kavanagh’s career path has been anything but conventional. Now a valued member of ifac’s new SME Division, he continues to build on his expertise as a Tax Consultant, playing an important role in strengthening our services for small, medium, and growing businesses across Ireland.

He works in a hybrid model, spending three days in the office and two days either working remotely or meeting clients. “I really value the flexibility,” Martin says. “Some days it’s helpful to be around colleagues in the office, and other times it’s good to have the space to focus on your own.”

Martin’s route to a career in tax was far from typical. “School wasn’t really for me at the time,” he explains.“The construction industry was the place to be, so I trained as a plumber, later spending time in Australia—including a stint milking cows, which gave me a bit of insight into the farming life.”

Eventually, Martin returned to education to retrain as an accountant. He started out in EY’s audit department before moving to tax, an area that sparked his interest.

“I’ve always found tax to be a space where you can make a real difference to businesses.”

When asked what stands out about working at ifac, Martin doesn’t hesitate: “It’s the people,” he says. “There’s a really supportive and positive atmosphere, and everyone works together to help each other succeed.”

“There’s encouragement from every level of the business. If you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll be given the chance to grow and develop.”

He also appreciates the leadership. “Our CEO, John Donoghue, leads by example. He focuses on finding solutions that work for everyone, which I really respect. And it’s the little things, too—like getting your birthday off—it shows the company values its people.”

Would Martin recommend ifac as a place to work?
“Absolutely,” he says, “it’s local and nationwide, specialised but broad, and there are opportunities across the business no matter what area you’re in.”
