Engineering taught me one thing, ifac taught me the rest

Before he ever set foot in ifac's Carlow office, Dean Malone was on a different path entirely. He completed a Bachelor of Sustainable Civil Engineering and went to work in the engineering sector. Then, while still working, sat down and studied for his ACA CAP 1 exams, determined to build a career in accountancy instead. "It was a different route into the profession, but one that has provided me with valuable experience and perspective." That path led him to ifac, where he's now a Trainee Accountant in the Carlow office, just over a year in since joining in June 2025.

His day-to-day involves preparing accounts for a range of sole traders and companies, many of them in the agricultural sector. Dean works through the full accounts preparation process, from the initial bookkeeping records right through to completed financial statements and tax returns. "This provides valuable exposure to a variety of accounting and taxation matters, while allowing me to develop my technical skills and industry knowledge."

What attracted him to the Graduate Programme was the chance to gain hands-on experience while working towards his professional qualification, all in one place. "The programme offered a combination of practical client work, structured training, and support for professional studies, which I felt would provide a strong foundation for my career."

He knew it was the right fit once he returned to the Carlow office after his initial training.

"I was welcomed warmly by my colleagues and felt supported from the outset. Everyone was approachable and willing to help, which made settling into the role much easier."

Since joining, Dean's role has grown considerably as his experience and confidence with client work have built up. He's also had the opportunity to work on the establishment of Registered Farm Partnerships, a key focus area for ifac's Farm Support team. "It has been a great opportunity to broaden my experience, develop new skills, and gain insight into the advisory side of the business."

"One of the things that stands out to me about working at ifac is the hands-on experience across a wide range of client work, backed up by real support from colleagues and management through mentoring and guidance."

That support has extended to his professional studies too, easing the pressure of balancing exams with work. "Being able to ask questions and learn from experienced colleagues has played an important role in developing my understanding and confidence. The guidance and support I have received have helped me progress in my role." He's currently working towards his ACA qualification, with his sights set on taking on greater responsibility once it's complete. "ifac provides a clear pathway for development, and I am excited to build on the experience and knowledge I have gained so far."

"The best thing about working with the ifac team is how willing people are to share their knowledge and experience, whether it's a quick question or guidance on something more complex, there's always someone available to help."

For Dean, what sets ifac apart is being trusted with real client work from an early stage. "It allows you to see first-hand the impact that the work we do has on our clients and their businesses, making the role both rewarding and meaningful."

That impact is what he enjoys most about client work, seeing, first-hand, how the advice and support ifac provides can help clients make informed decisions and reach positive outcomes. One case in particular stands out: Dean was recently involved in securing a significant tax saving for a client through Farm Restructuring Relief. "It was satisfying to see the practical difference our work made and the value it delivered for the client."

His advice for anyone weighing up a career at ifac: "Take the opportunity. The graduate programme provides excellent hands-on experience across a wide range of client work and specialist areas, while also offering strong support for professional studies. From my experience, it is a great place to begin your career and gain valuable exposure to different aspects of the profession."

He believes the people who thrive here are those who are motivated, willing to learn, and enjoy working with others.

"If you are prepared to get involved and make the most of those opportunities, it can be a very rewarding place to build your career."
